The Political Functions of the IACHR: A Focus on the Mechanisms Implemented during the Coup d'État in Honduras
Abstract
This paper focuses in the identification and analysis of non– judicial functions that fall within the Inter–American Commission on Human Rights, taking into consideration its role as a body for promoting and protecting human rights in the Americas. Also, in order to observe how the IACHR implements –in practice– those functions, we study the non–judicial actions that were undertaken by the Commission regarding the Coup D ́état occurred in Honduras in 2009, with the purpose of exerting pressure and demand return to a democratic government and respect for fundamental rights of all persons who were in that country.
