The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf and the Continental Shelf beyond 200 Nautical Miles. The Argentine Case
Abstract
This article analyses the legal notion of continental shelf, including its extension beyond 200 nautical miles. Furthermore, it examines the role of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf as the body created by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to serve as an intermediary between the aspirations of coastal States, on the one hand, and the interests of the international community as a whole, on the other, over the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. Additionally, it studies the procedure set up by article 76 of UNCLOS for the establishment of the outer limit of the continental shelf. Finally, it considers Argentina’s work towards obtaining a favourable recommendation by the CLCS on its presentation, and the establishment of the outer limit of Argentina’s continental shelf.
