Mendoza has historically been a key province for the Argentine wine industry. In recent years, it has come out as a scene for research aimed at demonstrating the diversity of terroirs within its territory and as a result, the production of wines presenting multiple phenolic profiles and sensory tipicity, even those produced from the same grape variety. These studies have largely been conducted through public-private partnerships.
Argentine legislation on the designation and presentation of wines, adopted following the domestic implementation of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, provides for the possibility of recognition and protection of Geographical Indications based on the unique features of a terruño (terroir).
In this context, the increasing trend toward research for the identification and analysis of terroirs in the province provides not only a scientific knowledge base for the wine industry but also commercial and socioeconomic prospects for producers and the geographic areas involved, respectively.
The selection of Mendoza as venue for the latest International Terroir Congress, the first of its kind to take place in Latin America, along with excellent ratings awarded by renowned publications to wines showcasing terroirs of the province are the most tangible results of this growing interest in this element.
