Argentina’s Copper Potential: A Strategic Projection (2027-2031)

Copper has consolidated its status as a critical mineral amid a resurgence of geopolitical competition among great powers. In a context characterized by a highly concentrated global supply, structurally growing demand, and an active search for reliable suppliers, this article analyzes Argentina’s potential to position itself as a relevant actor in the global value chain of copper during the 2027-2031 period.
Using a qualitative and analytical approach, the paper first examines the structure and the recent trends of the global copper market, and then assesses Argentina’s relative position within this value chain. It subsequently analyzes the structural conditions shaping the expansion of copper mining in the country, including material and infrastructure constraints, nationwide regulatory challenges, and tensions arising from the multilevel governance of the mining sector. Finally, the article examines six significant copper projects at advanced stages of development (Vicuña, El Pachón, MARA, Taca Taca, Los Azules and San Jorge), evaluating their potential contribution to Argentina’s international insertion in the global copper market.
