Erasto M. Villa: An Argentine Diplomat who Raised the Profile of his Professionalism in Japan

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the professionalism and prestige of the members of the Argentine Foreign Service, especially the figure of one of its members, Ambassador Erasto M. Villa. During the Second World War, the Argentine diplomat had to face unexpected situations and assume responsibilities far beyond those that normally corresponded to him when he fulfilled functions in the Embassy of the Argentine Republic to the Empire of Japan.

Author Biography

José Ramón Sanchis Muñoz, Miembro del Servicio Exterior de la República Argentina

Abogado graduado de la UBA con posgrado en Relaciones Internacionales por la American University (Washington, D.C.). Ingresó por concurso en la carrera diplomática y sirvió en diversos puestos en Washington, Ginebra (ministro), Nueva York (cónsul general) y Tokio (en dos oportunidades, como ministro y como embajador). En la Cancillería desempeñó diversas responsabilidades y fue subsecretario de Negociaciones Económicas Internacionales entre 1992 y 1993. Fue director del Instituto del Servicio Exterior de la Nación, representó al país en numerosas conferencias internacionales y presidió la Conferencia de Naciones Unidas sobre Prácticas Comerciales Restrictivas; integró, por Argentina, la Comisión de Administración Pública de las Naciones Unidas. Ha publicado los libros La Argentina y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Japón y la Argentina. Historia de sus relaciones, Historia diplomática argentina y numerosos artículos, además de dictar conferencias sobre temas de su especialidad. Ha sido catedrático en diversas casas de altos estudios, entre las que destacan la Universidad del Salvador, la Universidad Católica y la Universidad Kennedy.
