The Cry of the Butterflies (2023) portrays Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, focusing on the Mirabal sisters, symbols of resistance murdered in 1960. The series adopts a hybrid structure that combines historical and fictional characters to represent authoritarianism and state repression in the Caribbean. The objective is to examine how this narrative articulates the tensions between history and fiction in the representation of the Trujillo dictatorship and the memory of female resistance. Methodologically, the article analyzes the series through three axes: (1) the presence of historical realemes; (2) their interaction with fictional characters in “dark zones” where fiction fills historical gaps; and (3) the proposal of “pseudocontiguities with a dramatic function,” which allows the exploration of spatiotemporal links between reality and fiction. The study shows that the series projects Dominican history into a transnational sphere and makes Trujillista authoritarianism visible, although it also mythifies the Mirabal sisters, which may obscure other forms of female resistance during the period.
