The Role of Multilateral Development Banks in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: An Analysis of Infrastructure Investments

This research aims to analyze the contribution of the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Argentina during the period 2018–2023, focusing on infrastructure investments. Three key institutions in the region are studied: the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), CAF –Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean–, and the Financial Fund for the Development of the River Plate Basin (FONPLATA). A mixed methodological approach combines the analysis of official documents with the systematization and processing of 86 financing operations through programming tools designed to generate graphs and statistics that provide a comprehensive perspective.
The main results show that, within the framework of global governance where states face challenges that transcend borders, MDBs emerge as key actors in sustainable development through three functions: the mobilization of financial resources, the creation of capacities, and the provision of public goods. In this way, states receive long-term financing to carry out projects with potential impacts on various SDGs, particularly the one which is related to industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
